Handmade Holiday Bake Sale

December 15, 2008

A little birdie told me that one Jenn Rocha baked for three days straight! I could tell there were many eternally grateful shoppers - grateful that all the butter, flour and sugar was flying around her kitchen instead of theirs! What a great addition a bake sale is to any event. Maybe in the spring there could be bake sale with a pie contest as an added bonus. Sign me up now to be a judge! There was also a terrific selection of baking kits by Janet Watt. My favorite was the Lemon Bars-in-a-Jar! Those recipes need to be in a Los Cerritos Cook Book. Anybody interested in working on this project write to LosCerritos@mac.com

Thanks to all the bakers!

Handmade Holiday Store

A big, big thank you to Michele, Itima and her assistant Marilyn for working the PTA “store” and selling the Handmade Holiday bucks! We had grab and go craft kits, ready to go snowmen and various donated items for sale. Thanks Ladies!

Handmade Holiday Drum Circle

Thanks to Geoff Parry of Jammin’ Music for taking time out to haul the drums and percussion instruments over and setting up the drum circle. It set a great tone as you enter the event and the kids, loved it! I think Griffin may be leaning toward percussion…he chose drum circle for an hour, even after he got bucks handed to him for cookies. Now that’s saying something!

Thanks Geoff and Kerri!

Handmade Holiday Book Fair

Once Upon A Story the beloved and only independent children’s book store in Long Beach, was gracious enough to come out during the busy holiday shopping season with a carload of books and gifts. Please don’t forget to stop in and do some literary shopping this week and next!

The store is located on 4th street at Grand Avenue. It’s magical and filled with possibilities! Take the kids in to devour the words and illustrations. You will end up with a wish list that could fill your bookshelves!

Thanks Cyndie and Griselda!

Handmade Holiday was a huge success!

December 14, 2008

Thanks to all the parents, teachers, sponsors, staff & volunteers!! There is so much to say and so many folks to thank.  There was eating and drinking, drumming and singing, hiding and seeking, drawing and painting.  The kids had a blast, and I think the adults did as well.  I saw a lot of folks taking advantage of the delicious Patricia’s set up by bringing home dinner…lots of to go bags!

Thank you to everyone who donated time, material or funds.  Thanks to everyone who crafted, shopped and enjoyed the general ambiance of the afternoon.  We’ll definitely do this again next year!

Book Drive Makes Front Page of Gazette!

December 8, 2008

The following article was printed in today’s Uptown Gazette and was submitted by staff writer, Leslie A. M. Smith. She was able to connect with Virginia last week to discuss the book drive and what they are doing to fill the library in Afghanistan.

Tucking their children into bed is an impossibility for U.S. soldiers stationed overseas, but reading a goodnight story to their children might just happen — if only these dads had some children’s books where they are stationed in Afghanistan.

Librarian Virginia Sanchez is on a mission to change that. Sanchez is a Long Beach native and a Navy Reservist. She has been in Afghanistan since February and is sharing her passion for literacy by expanding the library at her base, Camp Blackhorse. With a little help from her hometown, she can expand the children’s section.

She’s getting that help from the teachers and students at Los Cerritos Elementary School. They are collecting children’s books on Dec. 12 to be sent to Sanchez in Afghanistan. All donations of new or used books are welcome.

“Right now, the service members are using camcorders and mailing the recordings home, or using Skype, Yahoo and other instant messaging services to read to their children,” Sanchez said via e-mail.

Soldiers don’t have much time to communicate to loved ones, according to Sanchez. And when they can, it’s expensive.

“A private Internet connection at Camp Blackhorse starts at $65 per month for maybe 10 hours per month and many of the younger service members cannot afford that,” she said. “I paid $110 per month to be able to log-in for as long as I could stay awake and have enough bandwidth to e-mail photos and my little stories to family and friends.”

Stories long have been part of Sanchez’s life. She began working in the Long Beach main library when she was just 19. She pursued a career in library sciences and holds a Master of Arts in Information Resources and Library Science from the University of Arizona.

“I attended UA on the Knowledge River Scholarship, an Institute of Museum and Library Services funded scholarship to increase the number of Latinos and Native Americans in librarianship. As of 2002, the number of professional librarians from these ethnicities was less than 3%,” she said.

Sanchez has worked in library services in many areas of California, including posts in state government departments in Sacramento and in Avalon, Santa Catalina. She went back to her alma mater as program manager for the Library School before returning to Southern California, where she last was the Adult Librarian at Dana Library in Bixby Knolls.

Sanchez said she enlisted in the Navy Reserves in 1999 and re-enlisted for another six years in 2007, but this is her first overseas deployment.

“My mother instilled a strong sense of community in her children,” Sanchez said. “It was a natural progression for me to go from helping out at pet vaccination clinics and food drives, to being a Guardian Angel walking street patrols, to serving my country.”

One of the first things she did at Camp Blackhorse was to reorganize the library and to increase the number of books accessible to the troops.

“In addition to posting to Operation Paperback and Books for Troops, the Navy and Marine Corps Moms of Quad Cities, Ill., were very instrumental in getting materials to me,” she said.

“We are building the children’s collection based on the USO’s United Through Reading (UTR) program. The actual USO-sponsored program underway at Blackhorse is just kicking off. We hope, now that we have consent of the command at Blackhorse, to qualify for the free camcorder, mini CDs and DVDs that are provided by the USO.”

According to Sanchez, the UTR program sends out 25 books, but through private donations there are far more than that already at Blackhorse.

“My poor fellow service members at Blackhorse have had to put up with me bouncing all over camp, reading out loud in delight at some book or other I unboxed,” she said. “Picture that in a combat zone!”

Handmade Holiday-Fabric Ornament

December 7, 2008

Birds, Trees & Angels, oh my! For just $2 - or should I say 2 Handmade Holiday bucks - the kids can stuff and finish (they are cut out and partially sewn) a shape of their choice at the “maker fair” on this upcoming Friday December 12th. Fabric Ornament kits will also be available to take home and complete or give as gifts. The kits are $5 and include materials to complete up to 60 ornaments on your own. The templates can be used year after year….mine have just completed their 2nd Christmas in the workshop!

Some of my best projects are Martha…This clock project will be available for $10 and is the high end craft of the day…Stop by the office to see more crafts and to sign up to facilitate a craft station.

Student Council and Librarian Organize Children’s Book Drive for those serving in Afghanistan

Book Drive:
Long Beach Public Librarian, Virginia Sanchez was stationed at the Dana Branch and is now stationed in Afghanistan. She created a library there and has identified a need for children’s books. The soldiers are able to share time with their children via web cam but would also like to read them bedtime stories and fulfill their buddy reader duties while serving…but there is a lack of books!

The students and teachers at Los Cerritos are organizing a book drive to help fill the library in Afghanistan with children’s books. Receive a token of our appreciation for books delivered to Los Cerritos during our Handmade Holiday event.

Handmade Holiday:
Friday December 12th from 2:30-5:30pm, Los Cerritos Elementary is hosting the Handmade Holiday event. A craft and maker faire - there will be myriad craft projects and supplies available to make unique and handmade items for gift giving.

In addition to the crafts, there will be a health expo, drum circle and book fair. Once Upon a Story books on 4th street has generously offered to bring out a selection of their best books and gift items which will be for sale in the school auditorium.

Jammin Music will be hosting a free drum circle. If you have never attended a community drum circle it is amazing! Hypnotic and rhythmic, the public drum circle is an incredibly cohesive musical treat…when led by Musical Director Geoff Parry, the random mix of players sound like they’ve been playing together for years!

Drop Off Locations for the Book Drive:
